External 4 credits Film language Close viewing Excellence criteria Inception Interstellar

The visual-text external: you write a critical essay responding to a question about studied visual text(s), for you, Christopher Nolan’s Inception and Interstellar. Practice

Recall it first, then use it — testing yourself builds the memory, where rereading the notes above only feels easier.

Recall and application shuffled together — you have to work out what each item wants before you can answer it, which is the part the exam actually tests. Both kinds feed the same spacing schedule, so anything you miss comes back sooner.

Say the answer out loud before flipping — that attempt is where the learning happens, even when you get it wrong.

Exam-style only. Instant feedback, shuffled each attempt, best score saved on this device.

What actually comes up

You choose your own studied visual or oral text and one of EIGHT given statements to argue against — there is no fixed scenario, so nothing below is content to memorise about a specific film. What repeats is the SHAPE of the eight choices: every year mixes the same handful of categories (character, setting, a key moment/turning point, time/editing, sound-and-vision combined, relationships, ideas/society), so one flexible argument per category covers almost any year's actual list.

The pattern — what to prepare

TopicAppears inGrade levelWhat to practise
A CHARACTER statement (heroes, villains, or characters who unsettle/change us) 3/3 years A–E Prepare one argument about a morally complex character (hero with weaknesses, or a villain with light and dark sides) — this category never misses a year.
A KEY MOMENT or turning point statement 3/3 years A–E Have one specific, closely analysed scene ready — the "one key moment that unsettles the audience" framing recurs almost word for word.
A SETTING statement 3/3 years A–E Know how your text uses setting (or contrast between settings) to make an argument about society or the world.
A SOUND-AND-VISION-COMBINED statement 3/3 years A–E "Film-language technique reference" — practise writing about a moment where cinematography, editing and sound work together, not just one in isolation.
A TIME / editing, or RELATIONSHIPS, or IDEAS-and-society statement 4/4 years, at least one of the three A–E Keep a fallback argument about how your text treats time (non-linear structure, a turning point) or what it argues about relationships or society.
An identical three-descriptor grade ladder, whatever the statement chosen 4/4 years, word for word — "What the grades require" — learn the ladder once; it never changes across the eight possible statements.
The wider connection to human experience/society named explicitly in the Excellence descriptor 4/4 years E "Connecting to human experience, society, and the wider world" — specific and tightly tethered beats a vague, deletable gesture.
A statement rewarding "unusual" or distinctive relationships, or characters 4/4 years A–E "Choosing a statement" — have one morally complex character or one unusual relationship ready, tied to a genuine theme, not just a plot summary.
