6 Connecting to human experience, society, and the wider world

Named explicitly in the Excellence descriptor every year — the single most commonly under-attempted part of an otherwise strong essay.

What a genuine wider connection looks like

  • Specific, not vague: name an actual comparable real-world situation, historical moment, or social pattern — never just "this still happens today".
  • Two or three sentences, tightly tethered to the text's own evidence — not a paragraph of unrelated commentary.
  • It should CHANGE how a moment in the text reads, not just decorate the essay's ending.
Exam-style A specific wider connection vs a vague one A film explores how isolation distorts a character's grip on reality. Connect this to the wider world for Excellence. VAGUE (weak): "This is relevant today because people still feel isolated." SPECIFIC (strong): "The same distortion of reality through prolonged isolation has been documented in accounts of extended solitary confinement, where subjects report losing confidence in their own perceptions — exactly the uncertainty the film's ambiguous ending refuses to resolve for the viewer." The specific version names an actual comparable situation and shows precisely what it changes about the reading, rather than a generic gesture at relevance. ✓ A genuine connection is one that, if deleted, would make the essay's final idea noticeably thinner — a vague one can be cut with no loss at all.
