Practice

Recall it first, then use it — testing yourself builds the memory, where rereading the notes above only feels easier.

Recall and application shuffled together — you have to work out what each item wants before you can answer it, which is the part the exam actually tests. Both kinds feed the same spacing schedule, so anything you miss comes back sooner.

Say the answer out loud before flipping — that attempt is where the learning happens, even when you get it wrong.

Exam-style only. Instant feedback, shuffled each attempt, best score saved on this device.

What actually comes up

Three questions every year, each opening with two or three short simplify/solve/rearrange parts before building to a longer problem wrapped in a real scenario (a laptop's depreciating value, a company logo, a canal cross-section). The discriminant, an exponential equation solved via a substitution, and a "find the constants" problem from given roots or points all recur.

The pattern — what to prepare

TopicAppears inGrade levelWhat to practise
Short index-law, rearranging, and simplifying parts open every question — always Achieved-level 3/3 years A "Reading the notation" — index and log laws must be automatic, since these parts are meant to be fast.
An exponential equation solved by substituting n (or u) for a power, then excluding an impossible negative root 3/3 years E "A let n = … substitution needs the negative root checked" — the excluded-root step is where the Excellence mark actually lives.
A quadratic's unknown constants found from given roots, points, or a discriminant condition (no real roots / one solution / equal-and-opposite roots) 3/3 years, in multiple parts each year M–E "Quadratics" — set up the equation the condition implies (discriminant = 0, discriminant < 0, or substitute the given point) before solving.
A real-world optimisation or comparison wrapped around the algebra (a depreciating asset, a logo's area, a canal, a decibel scale) 3/3 years, always the hardest part of at least one question E Translate the scenario into an equation FIRST, in terms of the one variable the question asks about, before applying any algebraic method.
Building a quadratic or cubic from given roots, or from points it passes through 3/3 years M "Roots and coefficients" — remember to multiply through by the leading coefficient after expanding the root factors.
Combining algebraic fractions into one, or proving an identity by simplifying only the complicated side 3/3 years M–E "Algebraic fractions and identities" — factorise every denominator before finding the common one.
A tangent-line or "does not cross the x-axis" condition, solved by setting the discriminant to 0 or an inequality 2/3 years confirmed M–E "Discriminant conditions: tangents, and does not cross" — substitute first, then apply the discriminant condition to the resulting quadratic.
Expressing one log in terms of two other given logs, using the product/quotient/power laws 2/3 years confirmed M "Expressing one log in terms of others" — factorise the target number into the given bases before applying the log laws.

Grades above are read from each year's own Achievement/Merit/Excellence evidence statement, condensed to the actual task — the schedules also grade holistically per question on a 0–8 scale, not a fixed mark per bullet. Several exponents in the 2025 paper were reconstructed from the marking schedule's own worked solutions where the source OCR badly mangled superscripts.
