Definition + recognition criteria, applied to the company (every paper)

Every paper has at least one "justify why X is reported as an asset/liability/income/expense". The structure never changes.

The five-step justify

  • Name the element and state its definition in three characteristics.
  • Attach the COMPANY'S OWN fact to each characteristic (control, past event, future benefit).
  • Recognition: why the benefit is probable — evidence from the report.
  • Recognition: why the amount is a faithful/reliable measure — the invoice, the contract, the valuation.
  • Classification: current or non-current, and why (the 12-month test).
Exam-style Justify reporting brands of
8.4m as an intangible asset Definition and recognition criteria for an asset. CONTROL: the company owns the brands and can restrict others from using them. PAST EVENT: they were acquired in an earlier business purchase. FUTURE BENEFIT: the brands attract customers, generating future sales revenue. PROBABLE: the brands are still trading and generating revenue now. RELIABLE MEASURE:
8.4m is the price actually paid in the acquisition — verifiable from the purchase agreement. ✓ All three definition characteristics and both recognition criteria are met, so brands are reported as a non-current intangible asset at
8.4m. ✕

The definition-only answer

Reciting the definition with no company figure attached earns the definition marks and stops there. The Excellence move is the other direction: lead with the company's fact, then name the characteristic it satisfies.
ElementThree characteristics

LiabilityPresent obligation · past event · outflow of economic benefit
IncomeIncrease in benefits (assets up/liabilities down) · during the period · other than owner contributions
