Constructing and delivering an oral text (internal)
Internal 3 credits Speech Delivery Structure for the ear Rhetoric AudienceAS 91102, 3 credits. TWO parallel criteria, both required at every grade: ideas/structure, AND oral language features (verbal technique, body language, voice) used to create effect. Excellence asks ideas to be "insightful and/or original" — a different bar from the portfolio's "compelling/persuasive/striking".
1 Reading the notation
Ideas/structure and oral language features, both required — and Excellence here means insight, not just persuasive polish.📖 Terms the schedule grades you on
3 terms- Ideas/structure (Merit → Excellence)
- CONVINCINGLY: reasoned, clear, relevant. EFFECTIVELY: insightful and/or original — distinct wording from the writing portfolio.
- Oral language features (note 8)
- Verbal technique, body language, and voice — three named categories, all assessed.
- The text (note 4)
- Must be the student's own work.
2 Delivery: the half that has no page equivalent
Pace, pause, eye contact, and command of the room. ✕An essay read aloud
The standard says construct AND deliver. A text written for the eye — long subordinate clauses, no repetition, no signposting — cannot be delivered convincingly however good it reads, because the listener has no way back.3 Structuring for the ear
Explicit signposting and deliberate repetition — invisible on the page, necessary aloud. What construction for the ear needs
- An opening that earns attention in the first fifteen seconds.
- Explicit signposting a listener cannot miss.
- Deliberate repetition of the key point.
- Rhetorical devices that each serve the purpose, not decoration.
4 Choosing an oral text type
The standard's own named examples (note 3).Valid oral text types
- Speeches, seminars, oral histories.
- Debates, live or recorded presentations.
- Other appropriate oral text types, primarily spoken.
Practice
Recall it first, then use it — testing yourself builds the memory, where rereading the notes above only feels easier.
Recall and application shuffled together — you have to work out what each item wants before you can answer it, which is the part the exam actually tests. Both kinds feed the same spacing schedule, so anything you miss comes back sooner.
Say the answer out loud before flipping — that attempt is where the learning happens, even when you get it wrong.
Exam-style only. Instant feedback, shuffled each attempt, best score saved on this device.
