Informed understanding using critical texts (internal)
Internal 4 credits Critical texts Hypothesis Literary theory Judgement SynthesisAS 91479, 4 credits — the most research-like internal in English. Frame a hypothesis or theory, select critical texts (theory, criticism, analysis), and develop a coherent reading, critique and interpretation of literature or language.
1 Reading the notation
The ladder specific to this standard — informed, then discerning, then sophisticated/insightful/original.📖 Terms the schedule grades you on
4 terms- Critical text
- Linguistic or literary theory, criticism, and/or analysis — written, oral or visual, student selected.
- Achieved: informed
- A coherent reading, critique and interpretation — judgements, commentary, details/examples.
- Merit: convincing
- Discerning understandings — distinguishing between critical positions, not treating them as one voice.
- Excellence: perceptive
- Sophisticated AND insightful and/or ORIGINAL understandings.
2 The process the standard names
Hypothesis → select texts → evaluate their reliability → synthesise. The order the standard implies
- Frame a hypothesis specific enough that a critic could disagree with it.
- Select critical texts deliberately — including at least one that pushes against your view.
- EVALUATE each source's reliability and usefulness for THIS hypothesis, stated explicitly.
- Test the hypothesis against each: what does this critic let me see, and where does the primary text resist them?
3 Synthesising primary source and critical texts
Combine sources into one argument — the standard's own named final step. Exam-style Synthesising two critics to interpret a character's motivation Use two disagreeing critical readings to build your OWN interpretation, per the standard's own Othello example. CRITIC A reads Iago's motivation as pure envy of Cassio's promotion. CRITIC B reads it as a symptom of deeper insecurity about status and race in Venetian society. RETURN TO THE PRIMARY TEXT: Iago's own soliloquies give reasons that shift and contradict each other across the play. SYNTHESISE: that very inconsistency supports reading the motivation as OVERDETERMINED — envy is the surface reason Iago gives himself, but the deeper insecurity Critic B identifies is what makes the specific FORM of his revenge so excessive. ✓ Neither critic is simply accepted or rejected — their disagreement is used TOGETHER, tested against specific textual evidence, to build a reading that is the student's own.4 The commonest failures, and the fix
All three failures share one fix: return to the primary text after every critical reference. ✕A literature review with no reading of your own
The verb in the title is develop an understanding. Accurately reporting four critics is a summary. The standard wants your interpretation, informed by them and tested against them — and at Excellence it explicitly welcomes an original reading.Practice
Recall it first, then use it — testing yourself builds the memory, where rereading the notes above only feels easier.
Recall and application shuffled together — you have to work out what each item wants before you can answer it, which is the part the exam actually tests. Both kinds feed the same spacing schedule, so anything you miss comes back sooner.
Say the answer out loud before flipping — that attempt is where the learning happens, even when you get it wrong.
