The writing portfolio (internal)
Internal 6 credits Crafted writing Purpose & audience Drafting Text types ControlAS 91101, 6 credits — the largest internal in Level 2 English. TWO PARALLEL criteria, not one: ideas/structure (Achieved → convincingly → effectively) AND language features for effect (Achieved → convincing effects → command attention). Both must be met at a grade for that grade to be awarded.
1 Reading the notation
Two parallel criteria — ideas/structure, and language features for effect — both required at every grade.📖 Terms the schedule grades you on
3 terms- Ideas/structure (Achieved → Merit → Excellence)
- Develops/sustains/structures → CONVINCINGLY (reasoned, clear, relevant) → EFFECTIVELY (compelling, persuasive, innovative and/or striking).
- Language features (Achieved → Merit → Excellence)
- Creates effects, minor errors only → CONVINCING effects + audience interest → COMMANDS ATTENTION: sustained, inventive, distinctive voice.
- Selection of writing (note 3)
- At least TWO pieces, taken to publication standard.
2 Craft and control, defined precisely
Two different things, both assessed, per the standard's own definitions. The checklist per piece
- Name the purpose and audience in one sentence each.
- Cut the weakest paragraph. Is the piece better? Then leave it out.
- Proofread for conventions — "only minor errors" is the Achieved bar.
3 Developing ideas, and language features for effect
Specific, nameable moves — not vague "good writing". ✕Meeting one criterion but not the other
A piece with vivid, deliberate language but underdeveloped, disconnected ideas has met the language-features criterion but not the ideas/structure one — and vice versa. BOTH bullets must be satisfied at a grade for that grade to be awarded; one strong criterion does not carry a weak one.4 Choosing text types
Two different types usually shows more than two pieces in the same voice. The standard's own named written pieces (note 4)
- Descriptions, narratives, poems, personal accounts.
- Scripts, reports, commentaries, text reviews.
- Articles, short fiction, essays, and other appropriate text types.
Practice
Recall it first, then use it — testing yourself builds the memory, where rereading the notes above only feels easier.
Recall and application shuffled together — you have to work out what each item wants before you can answer it, which is the part the exam actually tests. Both kinds feed the same spacing schedule, so anything you miss comes back sooner.
Say the answer out loud before flipping — that attempt is where the learning happens, even when you get it wrong.
Exam-style only. Instant feedback, shuffled each attempt, best score saved on this device.
