- Analyse
- Achieved's word: address the question, explore a relevant idea, and show awareness that meaning was deliberately crafted — not just describe what happens.
- Convincingly
- Merit's word: a reasoned, clear discussion of one or more ideas, weaving a RANGE of specific details from the text into the response.
- Perceptively
- Excellence's word: an insightful or original argument or interpretation, and a judgement about how effects and meanings relate to the text's purpose.
- Significant aspect
- A feature of the text (language, structure, imagery) that is doing real work toward the idea the question names — not just present.
- Close reading
- Evidence drawn from the text's own specific words, woven into the response — not paraphrase or general summary.
