Written text essay (91098): the same technique/effect skill, with preparation time The feature→effect habit drilled here on unseen texts is the identical skill that standard rewards with weeks of preparation on a chosen text — practising one strengthens the other directly. Visual or oral text(s) (91099): the same close-reading discipline, applied to a different medium Both standards reward naming a specific device and explaining its effect before reaching for a judgement about purpose — only the vocabulary (literary vs film/dramatic) changes. ✓

The big picture in one sentence

This is the one Level 2 English external where you cannot prepare quotes in advance — every other skill (naming a technique, quoting it, explaining its effect, reaching for purpose) transfers directly from the other two standards.

What genuinely transfers from the other two standards, and what does not

  • Transfers directly: the feature→effect→purpose reasoning chain, the discipline of naming a SPECIFIC device rather than a vague category, and writing a confident, evidenced claim.
  • Does NOT transfer: specific prepared quotes or scenes — there is nothing to memorise in advance about the actual text content, since it is unseen.
  • What DOES help preparation: drilling the reasoning chain on practice unseen texts regularly, so the SKILL itself becomes automatic even though the content cannot be.
