Building a flexible quote bank
The eight questions cover recurring categories — prepare evidence that can answer more than one. What to prepare in advance
- 8–12 short quotations per text, each tied to a technique AND an idea.
- At least one quote per category: theme, structure, language feature, character, setting, a turning point.
- A one-line theme statement for your text, phrased as a full claim, not a topic word.
- A back-up second text, in case your first choice does not fit any of the eight questions well.
Testing a quote for flexibility before the exam
A genuinely flexible quote can be adapted to answer at least two or three of the recurring categories, not just one. Before the exam, deliberately try writing a one-sentence explanation of how each of your prepared quotes would answer a setting question, then a structure question, then a character question — a quote that only works for one specific angle is less valuable than one that flexes.Practice for this standard covers the whole topic — flashcards and quiz.
