Essay architecture

Plan → thesis → body (PEEL) → conclusion. Answer the ACTUAL question.

Planning grid (do this in the exam)

  • Question focus words → define them in one line.
  • Thesis: your text's overall answer to the question.
  • 2–3 body points, each with its best quote attached.
  • Order points weakest-to-strongest; finish on your best.
Three grades The same evidence, written to Achieved, then Merit, then Excellence Question: "Analyse how language features deepened your understanding of an issue." ACHIEVED — "analyse": The author uses a metaphor to describe the flooded town, comparing it to a wound. This shows the damage was serious. MERIT — "…convincingly": The author's metaphor of the town as an open wound, never allowed to heal by the next storm, recurs at three points in the text, each time the water rising a little further — building an issue that is presented as chronic, not a single disaster. EXCELLENCE — "…perceptively": By returning to the wound imagery at moments of political inaction rather than at the flood itself, the author positions the reader to see the damage as self-inflicted — a judgement about who the metaphor is actually indicting. ✓ Same device, three depths: name it, trace its pattern, then use the pattern to make a judgement about purpose. That progression — not a longer essay — is what moves through the grades. ℹ

Excellence move

Connect the specific to the universal: "This positions the reader to question whether loyalty is a virtue at all — the novel's wider concern with [idea]." Wider-purpose sentences separate M from E.

Timing the exam room

  • Choosing your question: about 5 minutes, reading all eight before committing to one.
  • Planning: another 5-10 minutes, sketching the thesis and 2-3 points with their evidence.
  • Writing: the bulk of the remaining time, aiming for 4-5 concise, deeply-analysed pages rather than a longer, thinner one.
  • A short final check: does every paragraph answer the actual question, and does the conclusion add a genuine final insight?

Practice for this standard covers the whole topic — flashcards and quiz.
