Spectroscopic data

Internal 3 credits Mass spec IR ¹³C NMR Structure ID

Three techniques that, combined, let you identify an unknown organic molecule: mass spectrometry (molar mass, nitrogen, halogens, fragments), infrared (which functional groups) and ¹³C NMR (how many carbon environments, and what kind). The assessed skill is integrating all three. That is exactly what separates Achieved from Excellence. Learn it alongside Organic compounds →, whose molecules are the ones you will be identifying.

Practice

Recall it first, then use it — testing yourself builds the memory, where rereading the notes above only feels easier.

Recall and application shuffled together — you have to work out what each item wants before you can answer it, which is the part the exam actually tests. Both kinds feed the same spacing schedule, so anything you miss comes back sooner.

Say the answer out loud before flipping — that attempt is where the learning happens, even when you get it wrong.

Exam-style only. Instant feedback, shuffled each attempt, best score saved on this device.

Organic naming: the rules Foundations

51 cards · Functional groups, suffixes, prefixes, chain lengths and the priority order. This is separate from the Spectroscopy deck above and keeps its own spaced-repetition schedule — practising it will not affect what the main deck shows you.

Organic naming: practice Foundations

28 cards · Structures to name, and names to draw. Single functional group only — nothing branched or multi-group yet.
