Running an innovative and sustainable business activity (internal)

Internal 9 credits Planning Consultation Innovation Sustainability Evaluation Māori business concepts

At 9 credits this is the largest single standard in NCEA Business Studies — more than two externals combined. Four phases, all assessed: plan, consult (with SPECIALIST ADVISORS on the innovative/sustainable/ethical aspects), carry out, evaluate (against desired economic, social, cultural/ethical, and environmental outcomes). The grade turns on the quality of the planning, the consultation and the evaluation, not on whether the activity made money.

The four phases, and the state/include/integrate ladder that runs through all of them.

📖 Terms the schedule grades you on

5 terms
Business activity
The production of a good or service — the standard's own definition.
Innovative
Originality, invention, commercialisation, or improvement — re: business formation, functions, people, management or environment.
Sustainable
An ongoing focus on economic, social, cultural (including ethical), and environmental outcomes.
With consultation
Engaging specialist advisors in relation to the innovative, sustainable and ethical aspects of the activity.
Evaluate
Measuring performance against desired economic, social, cultural (including ethical), and environmental outcomes.

2 Planning the activity

The plan itself is dated evidence, produced BEFORE the activity runs.

What the plan must show

  • Objectives across all four outcome categories, not just financial ones.
  • The market, costing, roles and a timeline.
  • Named risks, and how they will be managed.
  • What specifically will make this activity innovative, stated up front.

3 Innovative and sustainable, in the standard's own terms

Two separate criteria, each with its own named categories — cover both explicitly.
CriterionCategories (standard's own wording)
InnovativeOriginality, invention, commercialisation, or improvement — re: formation, functions, people, management, environment
SustainableEconomic, social, cultural (including ethical), and environmental outcomes — ONGOING

4 Consultation with specialist advisors

Not general feedback — specialist input, specifically on innovation/sustainability/ethics, that visibly changes a decision. ✕

Recording a conversation instead of a changed decision

The evidence that counts is the CHANGED DECISION, not proof that a conversation happened. "We asked a supplier about packaging" is not consultation evidence; "the supplier's advice on compostable packaging led us to switch suppliers, adding $0.30 per unit but cutting landfill waste" is.

5 Evaluating the activity

Measured against the SAME four outcome categories used to define sustainability.
PhaseWhat it must showEvidence
Carry outThe activity happening, and decisions made in the momentRecords, photos, sales data, a log
EvaluateActual vs planned across economic/social/cultural-ethical/environmental outcomes, causes, and what you would changeFigures against the original objectives

Sound planning and sound evaluation are the Merit criteria in the standard's own words — so those two phases are where the grade is won or lost.

6 Māori business concepts throughout

One concept, genuinely connected to a real decision made in the activity.

Concepts that fit naturally here

  • Kaitiakitanga — a sustainability/environmental decision.
  • Manaakitanga — how customers or team members were treated.
  • Whanaungatanga — relationships built with suppliers or the community during consultation.
  • Rangatiratanga — self-determination and responsibility in how the activity was run.

Practice

Recall it first, then use it — testing yourself builds the memory, where rereading the notes above only feels easier.

Recall and application shuffled together — you have to work out what each item wants before you can answer it, which is the part the exam actually tests. Both kinds feed the same spacing schedule, so anything you miss comes back sooner.

Say the answer out loud before flipping — that attempt is where the learning happens, even when you get it wrong.

Exam-style only. Instant feedback, shuffled each attempt, best score saved on this device.
