Preparing a fallback business in advance
Every part explicitly allows swapping the given resource company for "a New Zealand-registered business operating in a global context that you have studied in depth" — the single highest-leverage piece of exam preparation for this standard. What a strong fallback business needs, ready in advance
- A real, named NZ business trading internationally, with actual known facts — not a hypothetical one.
- One concrete example each of: an innovation it has made, a quality system it plausibly uses, an intellectual property right it holds (a trademark, at minimum, is almost always identifiable), and a genuine tikanga Māori value or practice if one applies.
- Enough real detail that a benefit AND a cost can both be argued honestly for each factor — a one-sided prepared answer fails the judgement parts just as much as an unprepared one.
Preparing a business you know only shallowly
A fallback business is only useful if you know enough about it to write a genuine cost as well as a genuine benefit, and a real "how likely is it" judgement — a business you can only praise, with no honest downside available, will fail the Excellence judgement part just as surely as picking a business you know nothing about.A fast pre-exam checklist for your fallback business
- Can I name ONE innovation with a real benefit AND cost?
- Can I name the quality system it likely uses, and a genuine weakness of it?
- Can I name at least one IP right it plausibly holds?
- Does it genuinely practise a tikanga value — or should I be ready to skip that part for a different business?
