← Applying business knowledge to a critical problem
Reading the notation
One loop, run twice per paper — each time on a different problem drawn from the resource booklet.📖 Terms the schedule grades you on
6 termsCover the right column and check you can say what each one means.
- Threat
- An external change that could reduce the business's sales, profit, share or economic sustainability — always named FROM the resource, not invented.
- Opportunity
- The same or a related change viewed the other way — something the business could exploit for gain. Often literally the mirror of the threat identified one part earlier.
- Cause vs symptom
- The symptom is what is visibly going wrong; the cause is WHY. A solution matched to the symptom alone does not stop the problem recurring — always match solutions to the named cause.
- Identify and describe TWO solutions
- Achieved's instruction: name each solution and give its mechanism — what the business actually DOES, not a label like "improve service".
- Explain how EACH solution addresses the problem
- Merit's instruction: one separate paragraph per solution, tracing the mechanism back to the specific problem named in (a) or (c).
- Justify, with TWO reasons, which is more successful
- Excellence's instruction: pick ONE of the two solutions, give two genuinely different reasons it wins, and use resource evidence — not two reworded versions of the same reason.
Before writing anything
- Read the ENTIRE resource booklet before answering part (a) — parts (a)/(b) and (c)/(d) each depend on identifying their OWN separate problem correctly.
Practice for this standard covers the whole topic — flashcards and quiz.
