Carrying out, reviewing and refining a business activity (internal)

Internal 9 credits Planning Two cycles Review Refinement Community context Māori business concepts

AS 90848, 9 credits — the largest single standard in Level 2 Business Studies. The structure is unusual and it is the whole point: plan → run a FIRST cycle → review it → state refinements → run a SECOND cycle of the refined activity. The Merit-level review compares cycle two against a DIFFERENT baseline than the Achieved-level review does — one of the standard's sharpest, least obvious details.

2 The two-cycle structure

The review between the cycles is where the credits are.
StageWhat it must showEvidence
PlanObjectives, costing, pricing, roles, timeline, risksThe dated plan, before cycle one
Cycle oneThe activity actually runSales and cost records, photos, feedback
ReviewPlanned vs actual, and WHY the gapFigures compared, with causes named
RefinementsSpecific changes addressing named causesThe decisions, with reasons
Cycle twoThe refined activity run againRecords again — so the change can be measured

Comparing cycle two against cycle one with figures is the single strongest piece of evidence available, because it shows whether the refinement worked.

✕

One big cycle instead of two

Running one large, careful activity feels like the safer plan and it cannot meet the standard — there is no first cycle to review and no refinement to test. Make cycle one small and early on purpose.

3 Business knowledge, Māori concepts, and records

Both threads must be applied to THIS activity, not defined in the abstract.

What good evidence looks like

  • The dated plan, before cycle one begins.
  • Sales and cost records for BOTH cycles, kept as they happen.
  • Business knowledge and a Māori concept applied to an actual decision, not just defined.
  • The refinement decisions written down, with the cause each addresses.

4 Community context and well-being

A specific, checkable requirement — not just "involving other people".

What "community context" requires

  • A well-being focus: social, mental or physical health, or community cohesion.
  • Operating in the wider community, beyond the class itself.
  • A business activity centred on producing a good or service.

Practice

Recall it first, then use it — testing yourself builds the memory, where rereading the notes above only feels easier.

Recall and application shuffled together — you have to work out what each item wants before you can answer it, which is the part the exam actually tests. Both kinds feed the same spacing schedule, so anything you miss comes back sooner.

Say the answer out loud before flipping — that attempt is where the learning happens, even when you get it wrong.

Exam-style only. Instant feedback, shuffled each attempt, best score saved on this device.
