Prepare financial information
External 5 credits General journal General ledger Income Statement Statement of Financial Position Notes Cash calculationsThe most mechanical paper at Level 2, and the most predictable: (a) two general journal entries → (b) one general ledger account → (c) a statement or a set of notes, three times over. Question Three always ends in cash: a receivables or payables calculation, then a section of the Statement of Cash Flows.
Practice
Recall it first, then use it — testing yourself builds the memory, where rereading the notes above only feels easier.
Recall and application shuffled together — you have to work out what each item wants before you can answer it, which is the part the exam actually tests. Both kinds feed the same spacing schedule, so anything you miss comes back sooner.
Say the answer out loud before flipping — that attempt is where the learning happens, even when you get it wrong.
Exam-style only. Instant feedback, shuffled each attempt, best score saved on this device.
What actually comes up
The same shape every year: Question One and Two each run (a) two journal entries → (b) one ledger account → (c)/(d)/(e) statement or note completion, built from a resource booklet of real account balances (not reproduced here — the schedule's own worked figures are transcribed instead). Question Three always ends in cash: a receivables-or-payables reconstruction, then a section of the Statement of Cash Flows. The schedule marks every line with a complexity code rather than a per-part A/M/E label, so the grade shown here follows that code: S (given figure) ≈ Achieved, C (one calculation) ≈ Merit, T (two-step calculation) ≈ Excellence.
Across 3 years
9 questions · 42 parts 8 Achieved 11 Merit 23 ExcellenceThe pattern — what to prepare
| Topic | Appears in | Grade level | What to practise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two general journal entries opening every question — one straightforward (a figure given), one needing a GST split or a closing entry | 3/3 years, every question | A–M | "General journal entries" — read "including GST" vs "excluding GST" before touching the calculator. |
| One general ledger account per question, needing the correct contra account name AND the balancing procedure | 3/3 years, every question | M–E | Every ledger line needs a stem (the account on the OTHER side), a figure, and a balance — a figure with no stem or no running balance loses the line. |
| Question Three always ends in a cash reconstruction (receivables or payables) then a section of the Statement of Cash Flows | 3/3 years | M–E | "Cash: the calculations and the Statement of Cash Flows" — labelled working is required to receive the grade, even with the right final figure. |
| A fully classified statement or note, marked as much on CLASSIFICATION and layout (the P code) as on the individual figures | 3/3 years | E | "Statements and notes" — an expense in the wrong group, or a non-cash item inside the Statement of Cash Flows, costs marks even when the arithmetic is right. |
| A GST-inclusive figure requiring the ×3/23 / ×20/23 split before any other figure in the entry can be correct | 3/3 years, at least once per question | A–M | "GST calculations, in depth" — always split GST first; every downstream figure in that entry depends on it. |
| A Property, Plant and Equipment note requiring this year's depreciation charge, sometimes including a disposal | 3/3 years | M–E | "Depreciation and disposing of an asset" — a disposal removes the specific asset's cost AND accumulated depreciation entirely, and compares proceeds to carrying amount for a gain/loss. |
| A doubtful debts closing entry recording only the CHANGE in the allowance, not the full new balance | 2/3 years directly (2024), and recurring on the wider question index | E | "The allowance for doubtful debts, in depth" — compare the new estimate to the existing allowance, and journal only the difference. |
| A closing entry distinguishing expense/revenue accounts (which close to Profit and Loss Summary) from drawings (which closes directly to Capital) | 3/3 years, every question | A–M | "Closing entries and why they work" — drawings never passes through profit calculation. |

Every year is built on a different entity with different account balances, drawn from a resource booklet not reproduced here — the schedule's own worked figures are transcribed instead, so the numbers above are real but the resource booklet itself is not searchable. The complexity-code grading (S/C/T/V/P) is mapped to A/M/E by dominant complexity, not quoted directly from an A/M/E label, since this standard is graded holistically on a point total rather than per part.
