← Electricity and electromagnetism
Reading the notation
A small set of symbols carries every part of this paper — get them precise, since a mixed-up V, I and R is the fastest way to lose a method mark.📖 Symbols used in electricity
7 termsCover the right column and check you can say what each one means.
- V, I, R
- Voltage (V), current (A), resistance (Ω) — related by V = IR.
- P
- Power (W) — P = VI = I²R = V²/R, chosen by whichever two quantities you already have.
- ε, r
- EMF (V), the cell's total energy per coulomb, and internal resistance (Ω) — terminal voltage V = ε − Ir.
- B
- Magnetic field strength (T, tesla).
- F = BIL
- The force on a current-carrying wire in a magnetic field, perpendicular to both — found with the left-hand motor rule.
- Faraday's law
- A CHANGING field or flux through a circuit induces an EMF — no change, no EMF.
- Lenz's law
- The induced current opposes the change that caused it.
