← Interacting natural processes in a New Zealand environment
Writing the essay to the top band
One holistic 0–8 mark, exactly as in 91427 — the whole shape of the essay matters, not a checklist of separate bullet points.A structure that hits every band descriptor
- Opening: name the environment and its interacting processes explicitly.
- Interactions (body paragraphs): one paragraph per interaction, each containing the word "because" linking one process to another.
- Variation: an explicit spatial comparison (two named places) or temporal comparison (two named times), matched to whatever the question actually asks for that year.
- Conclusion: a genuine new insight — ideally the strongest interaction in your case study, stated as a loop or feedback, not a restatement of the introduction.
Reusing last year's essay shape without checking the current wording
The task has changed every year since 2023: fully open, then spatial-OR-temporal (2024), then two DIFFERENT features across two parts (2025). An essay planned for last year's structure can miss a compulsory requirement this year — always read the actual instructions on the day before starting to write. Exam-style A conclusion that reaches Excellence Write a strong closing paragraph for a Southern Alps / glaciated valley essay. RESTATE THE STRONGEST LINK: "The clearest interaction in this environment is the feedback loop between erosion and uplift." STATE THE MECHANISM ONE MORE TIME, briefly: "As glacial and fluvial erosion strip mass from the range, the crust unloads and rises further, exposing fresh rock to the same erosive processes." CLOSE WITH THE INSIGHT: "This loop, not any single process acting alone, is why the Southern Alps remain a similar height despite some of the fastest uplift and erosion rates on Earth." ✓ A conclusion that names the SAME loop already argued in the body, then draws out what that loop actually EXPLAINS about the environment, is what "insight" looks like in this standard's Excellence band.A fast self-check before submitting
- Does every body paragraph name two processes, not just one?
- Does the conclusion state an insight, not a restatement of the introduction?
