📖 The concepts the papers print and expect you to use

8 terms
Environments
May be natural and/or cultural. They have particular characteristics and features, which can be the result of natural and/or cultural processes. Your chosen environment is the frame for everything else
Location
Where something is found. Location can be an advantage or a constraint, and can be described in absolute or relative terms. Say whether it is an advantage or a constraint, and for whom
Processes
A sequence of actions, natural or cultural, that shapes and changes environments, places and societies. Processes can have temporal or spatial variations. Erosion, volcanism, desertification, globalisation
Interaction
Elements of an environment affecting each other and being linked together — movement, flows, connections and interrelationships, one- or two-way. Landscapes are the visible outcome of interactions. The concept the essay is built on
Change
Any alteration to the natural or cultural environment. Change can be spatial and/or temporal, occurs at varying rates, at different times and in different places. "Varying rates" invites comparing a fast change with a slow one
Perspectives
Ways of seeing the world that help explain differences in decisions about, responses to and interactions with environments — bodies of thought or world views that shape values and have built up over time. Not just an opinion: explain WHY the group holds it
Patterns
The arrangement of features or values across space, or their trend over time — clustered, dispersed, linear, concentrated, rising or falling. Describe it, quantify it, then name the anomaly
Sustainability
Whether the way an environment is used can continue without degrading it — examined at Level 2 as social, economic AND environmental sustainability. All three dimensions, not just the environmental one
