A geographic topic at a global scale (internal)

Internal 3 credits Global pattern Factors & processes Significance Terminology

AS 91246, 3 credits. Three components: describe a spatial or temporal pattern, explain the factors and/or processes that contribute to it, and explain the significance of the topic for people. Excellence requires the significance explanation to show INSIGHT specifically — its own distinct bar from "fully explaining".

1 Reading the notation

"Showing insight" is attached specifically to the significance component at Excellence, not the whole answer.

📖 Terms the schedule grades you on

4 terms
Explain aspects (Achieved)
Describe the pattern; explain factors/processes; explain significance for people.
In depth (Merit)
Detail throughout; pattern description USES geographic terminology/concepts.
Comprehensive (Excellence)
Full explanations throughout; significance explained SHOWING INSIGHT specifically.
Global (note 3)
Regions or nations across different CONTINENTS or HEMISPHERES.

2 Describing the pattern

Spatial or temporal — pick one and stay consistent.

A description that scores

  • State whether the pattern is spatial or temporal.
  • The overall distribution or trend in one sentence, using terminology.
  • Highest and lowest, named, with figures.
  • One anomaly — and later, why it breaks the pattern.

3 Factors and processes

Where vs how — using both is stronger than either alone. ✕

A "global" topic confined to one continent

Note 3 defines global as spanning different continents or hemispheres. A pattern compared only between regions of one country, however well analysed, has not met the scope this standard requires.

4 Significance for people, and where insight comes from

A named group with a measurable outcome — and noting what the global picture hides.

Where Excellence-level insight comes from

  • Sub-national variation the global pattern conceals.
  • A specific, named group with a measurable, distinct outcome.
  • A consequence that connects back to the factors/processes explained earlier.

Practice

Recall it first, then use it — testing yourself builds the memory, where rereading the notes above only feels easier.

Recall and application shuffled together — you have to work out what each item wants before you can answer it, which is the part the exam actually tests. Both kinds feed the same spacing schedule, so anything you miss comes back sooner.

Say the answer out loud before flipping — that attempt is where the learning happens, even when you get it wrong.

Exam-style only. Instant feedback, shuffled each attempt, best score saved on this device.
