The précis map (the most reliable marks in the paper)

Do this part carefully and slowly — the marks are procedural, not analytical.

The checklist, in order

  • Read the list of features to include — and include ONLY those.
  • Find each on the resource map; note its position relative to the coast, a grid line or a main road.
  • Draw the outline first (coast, border), then place features in matching relative positions.
  • Give each feature type a distinct symbol: shading for areas, a point for buildings, a line for routes.
  • Add the KEY, matching every symbol used — and nothing unused.
  • Add the TITLE (place and what the map shows), the NORTH ARROW, and the scale if given.
  • Check accuracy against the original before moving on.
Skill Straight-line distance from a 1:50 000 map The lake measures 4.5 cm east to west on the map. 4.5 cm on the map × 50 000 = 225 000 cm on the ground 225 000 cm ÷ 100 = 2 250 m 2 250 m ÷ 1 000 = 2.25 km ✓ 2.25 km. Always convert to km and write the unit — an unlabelled number does not score.
If the précis map asks for...Also include
A river or flow of waterThe direction of flow, usually as an arrow
A boundary or rift valleyThe full extent of the boundary, not just a single point
A named grid referencePlot exactly at that reference, cross-checked against the resource map's own grid
Two time periods (e.g. "present-day area")Only the CURRENT extent unless an earlier one is separately asked for

Practice for this standard covers the whole topic — flashcards and quiz.
