Healthcare need vs opportunity, worked in full

Part (c) is highly prepareable in advance — build one full worked example for each of AI and encryption, covering both the "need" and "opportunity" framing.

The distinction, applied concretely

  • A "NEED" answer identifies a real, existing PROBLEM the technology solves — something that was difficult, slow, or error-prone WITHOUT it.
  • An "OPPORTUNITY" answer identifies a NEW CAPABILITY the technology has opened up — something that was not previously possible at all, not just an improvement on an existing process.
  • The same technology can usually support EITHER framing — pick whichever your prepared example argues most concretely and specifically.
Worked example AI in healthcare — a NEED answer Explain how AI is needed in healthcare to deliver patient care. THE NEED: radiologists reviewing medical scans (X-rays, MRIs) manually can miss subtle early-stage abnormalities, especially under high caseloads, and review is slow relative to patient volume. HOW AI ADDRESSES IT: a trained image-recognition model (a neural network) flags scans with a high probability of containing an abnormality, prioritising them for urgent human review and catching patterns a fatigued or rushed clinician might miss. THE OUTCOME: earlier detection of conditions like tumours improves treatment outcomes, and prioritisation means the most urgent cases are reviewed first rather than in arrival order. ✓ The answer names the SPECIFIC problem (manual review limitations), the SPECIFIC mechanism (an image-recognition model), and the SPECIFIC outcome (earlier detection, better prioritisation). Worked example Encryption in healthcare — an OPPORTUNITY answer Explain what opportunity encryption has provided in healthcare. THE OPPORTUNITY: secure telehealth consultations were not practically possible before strong, accessible encryption — patient data and video/audio would be too exposed to intercept over the internet. HOW ENCRYPTION ENABLES IT: end-to-end encrypted video and data channels let a patient and clinician communicate remotely with the same confidentiality expected of an in-person consultation. THE NEW CAPABILITY: patients in remote or mobile-limited areas can now access specialist consultations that were previously only available by travelling to a clinic — a genuinely NEW capability, not just a faster version of an old one. ✓ This is framed as an OPPORTUNITY (a new capability), not a NEED, because remote consultation was not previously possible at all — distinguishing this from simply making an existing process faster is what makes the framing correct.

A fast check before choosing NEED or OPPORTUNITY

  • Does the technology fix a problem an existing process already had (NEED), or make possible something that could not be done at all before (OPPORTUNITY)?
  • Have I named the specific mechanism, not just the technology's name?
