Question 2(b) Achieved
Practises Differential equations
An exponential integral, a negative-power differential equation, an upper limit that appears on both sides, a trig quotient whose top is a multiple of the derivative of its bottom, and a proportional-to-the-square model built from scratch.
Solve the differential equation dy/dx = (4x + 1)−1/2, where x ≥ 0, given that when x = 6, y = 7.5.
Work it out
Try it on paper first. Stuck? Take one hint at a time.
-
1 Integrate (4x + 1)−1/2: add one to the power, divide by the new power and by the 4.
y = (4x + 1)1/2/(1/2 × 4) + c = (1/2)(4x + 1)1/2 + c -
2 Use y = 7.5 when x = 6.
4(6) + 1 = 25 and √25 = 5, so 7.5 = 2.5 + c and c = 5.
What the marker wanted
- Achieved The whole solution, with c = 5 and the integration shown.
