← Life processes at the cellular level
Reading the notation
A small set of terms carries every part of this paper — the schedules reward you for naming the right process and site, not just describing what happened.📖 Terms used in cellular life processes
6 termsCover the right column and check you can say what each one means.
- Diffusion
- NET movement of particles from high to low concentration, passive (no energy needed).
- Osmosis
- The diffusion of WATER through a partially permeable membrane, from a dilute to a more concentrated solution.
- Active transport
- Movement of particles AGAINST their concentration gradient, using ATP.
- Enzyme
- A protein catalyst that lowers activation energy — its active site is specific to one substrate shape.
- Surface area to volume ratio (SA:V)
- A cell's surface area divided by its volume — falls as a cell grows, since volume grows faster than surface area.
- Mitosis
- Cell division producing two genetically identical diploid daughter cells — for growth and repair.
Practice for this standard covers the whole topic — flashcards and quiz.
