Reading the notation

Never abstract. Every characteristic gets one of the business's own facts attached.

The four elements, exactly as the marking schedules word them

4 terms
Asset
A resource controlled by the entity, as a result of a past event, from which future economic benefits are expected to flow. Recognition: probable inflow + faithfully represented
Liability
A present obligation of the entity, arising from a past event, the settlement of which is expected to result in an outflow of economic benefits. Current if settled within 12 months
Income
An increase in economic benefits during the reporting period, other than contributions from the owner. Assets up OR liabilities down
Expense
A decrease in economic benefits during the reporting period, other than distributions to the owner. Assets down OR liabilities up
Exam-style Justify why shoes given to employees are an expense Use the three characteristics and the recognition criterion of faithful representation. DECREASE in economic benefits: inventory (an asset) falls when the shoes leave the business. DURING the reporting period: they were handed over in the year ended 31 March. NOT a distribution to the owner: they went to employees, so this is a staff/wage-related expense of the entity, not drawings. FAITHFUL REPRESENTATION: the cost is the actual purchase cost of those shoes, evidenced by the supplier invoice — complete, neutral and free from error. ✓ Three characteristics + the named recognition criterion. If the shoes had gone to the owner's family it would be drawings instead — the accounting entity concept decides which.
